The Outland Gourmet Achievement (for post-BC players)

May 29, 2011

I started playing WoW shortly after the launch of WotLK.  I don’t remember a ton about the leveling process of my first character, but I do remember the confusion that came as I reached the upper 50’s.  In addition to the numerous unusual tokens and items I was randomly collecting, (and blindly dumping into my bank having no clue what they were for!) I eventually found my way to Outland.  There, my confusion only increased as I was confronted by new factions, currencies, and confusing content which was no longer very relevant on my progression to level 80.

Needless to say, it wasn’t until the lull before the Cataclysm that I finally decided to go through my bank and figure out what all these crazy items were for as well as check out some of the BC-related achievements that I had missed.  One that I’m working on currently is ‘The Outland Gourmet.’  Simply put, this achievement (which is required for the cooking meta ‘Hail to the Chef‘) requires one to cook 26 separate BC-era cooking recipes.

Sounds simple enough… well…

It’s gonna take some time

What makes this achievement somewhat tricky is the fact that some of the recipes that you need to cook require a bit of luck and time to obtain.  In fact, of the 26, only 3 are recipes that you can learn from any cooking trainer!  Of the rest, 4 are BoP recipes that are random drops from doing the Rokk‘s cooking daily (BC-era daily cooking quest giver in Shattrath), and the rest are either sold by vendors, quest rewards, or have a chance to come from the Dalaran(!) cooking daily.

The good news is that many (15) of the recipes are not bound, so it’s possible to find them on the AH if you don’t want to take the time to do the footwork traipsing over Outland to gather them all.  Of course, they will often be marked up significantly in price when they’re even available, but if it’s worth it to you, then by all means go ahead.

Ready, Set…

So before I get into the nitty-gritty of how to obtain each recipe, let’s make sure that you’re at a point where you can successfully complete the achievement.  Here are the minimum requirements required to complete the achievement:

  • Minimum character level of 70 (for the daily cooking quests)
  • Minimum cooking skill of 350
  • Comparable fishing skill or extra cash on hand to purchase the fish ingredients
  • Minimum 5 days (more likely much longer depending on your luck with recipe drops)
  • 3 Glowcaps*
  • Minimum neutral reputation with Sporregar*
  • Minimum neutral reputation with the Kurenai (Alliance only)*
  • Minimum 37g50s to purchase recipes

*These requirements can be avoided if you can purchase the recipes from the AH or a friend.

The Nitty Gritty

Assuming you meet the requirements I listed above, you’re ready to get started.  (Of course you will also need to gather both the recipes and the mats in addition to what I listed above).  While I could make a detailed plan that would weave you through Outland gathering all the necessary items, if you’re reading this then you probably have an interest in achievements, and if you’re interested in achievements then you have probably already completed a few of these steps of the achievement already.  Thus, I’ve organized the data below alphabetically by recipe, allowing you to quickly find the recipe(s) that you are concerned about.

The biggest obstacles that you’re going to run up against are getting some of the rarer recipe drops.  Thus, unless you’re inordinately lucky and can get these drops off the AH, the best plan of attack is to start by doing the Shattrath and Dalaran cooking daily quests immediately and then as often as possible.  Make sure to keep track of which recipes you still need and whether they are found in the Barrel of Fish or the Crate of Meat that the Rokk awards, so you can make an educated choice – many recipes only come in one or the other!

And now, without further ado…

Blackened Basilisk

  • Recipe Source: Vendor (Terokkar Forest), AH
  • Cost: 3g
  • A: Supply Officer Mills in Allerian Stronghold
  • H: Innkeeper Grilka in Stonebreaker Hold
  • Mats: 1 Chunk o’ Basilisk
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Notes: The recipe is not soulbound and may be purchased off the AH or an alt.  These vendors also sell the recipe for Warp Burger, so pick that up while you’re there if you need it!

Blackened Sporefish

  • Recipe Source: Vendor (Zangarmarsh), AH
  • Cost: 2g
  • A/H: Juno Dufrain, Fishing trainer in Cenarion Refuge
  • Mats: 1 Zangarian Sporefish
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Notes: The recipe is not soulbound and may be purchased off the AH or an alt.

Blackened Trout

  • Recipe Source: Vendor (Zangarmarsh), AH
  • Cost: 2g
  • A: Doba in Orebor Harborage
  • H: Gambarinka in Zabra’jin
  • Mats: 1 Barbed Gill Trout
  • Difficulty: Easy for Horde, potentially medium for Alliance
  • Notes: Alliance must be neutral with the Kurenai (only requiring 3 short quests), no rep requirement for Horde players.  Doba also sells the recipe for Feltail Delight, so pick it up while you’re there!  Recipe not soulbound, so check AH first.

Broiled Bloodfin

  • Recipe Source: Barrel of Fish quest reward from Shattrath cooking daily
  • Cost: N/A
  • A/H: quest giver The Rokk in Shattrath (Lower City)
  • Mats: 1 Bloodfin Catfish
  • Difficulty: Variable – random drop
  • Notes: This recipe is one of the reasons you should start doing the Shattrath daily right away.  The recipe is soulbound and you could be very unlucky with its drop rate.  To acquire a Bloodfin Catfish you must also make a special trip to Deadwind Pass if there are none on the AH.  If you need to cook up Skullfish Soup also, make sure to fish up the necessary Crescent-Tail Skullfish while there.

Buzzard Bites

  • Recipe Source: Quest reward from Smooth as Butter quest in Hellfire Peninsula, AH
  • Cost: N/A
  • A/H: quest giver Legassi in southern Hellfire Peninsula
  • Mats: 1 Buzzard Meat
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Notes: The recipe isn’t soulbound, so if you’re lucky enough to find this on the AH then you can save yourself a trip out to Hellfire.  Otherwise, the quest is easy enough, just look for those crazy goblins near the crashed zeppelin.

Clam Bar

  • Recipe Source: Vendor (Zangarmarsh), AH
  • Cost: 1 Glowcap
  • A/H: Mycah, Sporeggar Quartermaster
  • Mats: 2 Jaggal Clam Meat
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Notes: Not soulbound, so check AH first.  You must be neutral with Sporeggar to talk with Mycah.  He sells this recipe and Sporeling Snack as well, so pick up both (you’ll need 3 Glowcaps total).  Glowcaps may be obtained in a number of ways, the easiest being simply picking them in western Zangarmarsh.  Jaggal Clam Meat drops off of any Outland naga.

Crunchy Serpent

  • Recipe Source: Vendor (Blade’s Edge Mountains), ALSO Horde-only quest reward from Mok’Nathal Treats quest
  • Cost: 3g
  • A: Sassa Weldwell near Death’s Door, Xerinthia Ravenoak in Ruuan Weald
  • H: Quest-giver Matron Varah in Mok’Nathal Village, Xerinthia Ravenoak in Ruuan Weald
  • Mats: 1 Serpent Flesh
  • Difficulty: Easy to Medium
  • Notes: Soulbound recipe, so you must either complete the quest or purchase it directly from the vendor.  Xerinthia, while friendly to both factions, has limited quantities of the recipe.  Both the quest and all the vendors also provide the recipe for Mok’Nathal Shortribs, so make sure to pick it up as well!

Delicious Chocolate Cake

  • Recipe Source: Daily quest reward from Shattrath and Dalaran cooking dailies
  • Cost: N/A
  • A: cooking daily quest giver The Rokk in Shattrath, Katherine Lee in Dalaran
  • H: cooking daily quest giver The Rokk in Shattrath, Awilo Lon’gomba in Dalaran
  • Mats: 8 Simple Flour, 4 Ice Cold Milk, 4 Mild Spices, 8 Small Egg, 1 Flask of Port, 3 Mageroyal
  • Difficulty: Medium to Hard
  • Notes: Another soulbound recipe, start doing those dailies!  All of the mats are easily obtainable from various vendors in capital cities except for the Small Eggs and Mageroyal.  While Mageroyal is usually on the AH, Small Eggs are easily farmable in many low-level zones, especially Eversong Woods outside of Silvermoon.  As an added bonus, cooking up one of these cakes will also grant you the achievement The Cake is not a Lie, also required for the cooking meta… ah, Portal… one of the reasons this post has been so long in coming!

Feltail Delight

  • Recipe Source: Vendor (Zangarmarsh), AH
  • Cost: 2g
  • A: Doba in Orebor Harborage
  • H: Zurai in Swamprat Post
  • Mats: 1 Spotted Feltail
  • Difficulty: Easy for Horde, potentially medium for Alliance
  • Notes: Recipe not soulbound, so check the AH first.  Alliance must be neutral with the Kurenai (only requiring 3 quick quests), no rep requirement for Horde players.  Doba also sells the recipe for Blackened Trout, so make sure to pick that up while you’re there!

Fisherman’s Feast

  • Recipe Source: Trainer
  • Cost: 2g
  • A/H: any cooking trainer
  • Mats: 1 Huge Spotted Feltail
  • Difficultly: Easy to Medium
  • Notes: The Huge Spotted Feltail might be somewhat difficult to get: check the AH, or pray that you get a free one in a Barrel of Fish (like I did!).  If not, be ready to spend some time fishing for it.

Golden Fish Sticks

  • Recipe Source: Vendor (Terokkar Forest), AH
  • Cost: 3g
  • A: Innkeeper Biribi in Allerian Stronghold
  • H: Rungor in Stonebreaker Hold
  • Mats: 1 Golden Darter
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Notes: The recipe isn’t soulbound.  These vendors also sell the recipe for Spicy Crawdad, so pick it up while you’re there and save yourself a trip!

Grilled Mudfish

  • Recipe Source: Vendor (Nagrand), AH
  • Cost: 3g
  • A: Uriku in Telaar
  • H: Nula the Butcher in Garadar
  • Mats: 1 Figluster’s Mudfish
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Notes: This recipe is not soulbound, so check the AH.  Both vendors require you to be neutral with the Kurenai and the Mag’har.  This isn’t difficult and can be easily done in three short quests.  (Check the linked faction pages for more info.)  Furthermore, each of these vendors also sells the recipes for Poached Bluefish, Roasted Clefthoof, and Talbuk Steak – all required for the achievement.

Hot Buttered Trout

  • Recipe Source: Trainer
  • Cost: 2g
  • A/H: any cooking trainer
  • Mats: 1 Enormous Barbed Gill Trout
  • Difficulty: Easy to Medium
  • Notes: Like with the Fisherman’s Feast, what makes this recipe somewhat harder is finding the mats to cook.  Check the AH, try asking in trade, and if you never get one in your Barrels of Fish from doing your BC cooking dailies, be prepared to spend some time fishing an Enormous Barbed Gill Trout up.

Kibler’s Bits

  • Recipe Source: Daily quest reward from Shattrath cooking dailies
  • Cost: N/A
  • A/H: A: cooking daily quest giver The Rokk in Shattrath
  • Mats: 1 Buzzard Meat
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Notes: Soulbound recipe, do your Shattrath cooking daily!

Mok’Nathal Shortribs

Poached Bluefish

  • Recipe Source: Vendor (Nagrand), AH
  • Cost: 3g
  • A: Uriku in Telaar
  • H: Nula the Butcher in Garadar
  • Mats: 1 Icefin Bluefish
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Notes: This recipe is not soulbound, so check the AH.  Like with Grilled Mudfish, both vendors require you to be neutral with the Kurenai and the Mag’har.  This isn’t difficult and can be easily done in three short quests.  (Check the linked faction pages for more info.)  Furthermore, each of these vendors also sells the recipes for Grilled Mudfish, Roasted Clefthoof, and Talbuk Steak – all required for the achievement.

  • Cost: 2g
  • A: Sid Limbardi in Honor Hold

  • A: Uriku in Telaar
  • H: Nula the Butcher in Garadar
  • Mats: 1 Clefthoof Meat
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Notes: This recipe is not soulbound, so check the AH.  Like with Grilled Mudfish, both vendors require you to be neutral with the Kurenai and the Mag’har.  This isn’t difficult and can be easily done in three short quests.  (Check the linked faction pages for more info.)  Furthermore, each of these vendors also sells the recipes for Grilled Mudfish, Poached Bluefish, and Talbuk Steak – all required for the achievement.

Skullfish Soup

  • Recipe Source: Barrel of Fish quest reward from Shattrath cooking daily
  • Cost: N/A
  • A/H: quest giver The Rokk in Shattrath (Lower City)
  • Mats: 1 Crescent-Tail Skullfish
  • Difficulty: Variable – random drop
  • Notes: Do your Shattrath cooking daily!  (The recipe is soulbound.)  To acquire a Crescent-Tail Skullfish you must also make a special trip to Deadwind Pass if there are none on the AH.  If you need to cook up a Broiled Bloodfin as well, make sure to fish up a Bloodfin Catfish while there.

  • A: Innkeeper Biribi in Allerian Stronghold
  • H: Rungor in Stonebreaker Hold

  • Cost: N/A
  • A/H: A: cooking daily quest giver The Rokk in Shattrath
  • Mats: 1 Talbuk Venison

  • Cost: 2 Glowcaps
  • A/H: Mycah, Sporeggar Quartermaster
  • Mats: 1 Strange Spores
  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Notes: See notes for Clam Bar.  Not soulbound, so check AH first.  You must be neutral with Sporeggar to talk with Mycah.  He sells this recipe and Clam Bar as well, so pick up both (you’ll need 3 Glowcaps total).  Glowcaps may be obtained in a number of ways, the easiest being simply picking them in western Zangarmarsh.  Strange Spores drop from many Zangarmarsh beasts (not naga).

Stewed Trout

  • Recipe Source: Trainer
  • Cost: 1.5g
  • A/H: any cooking trainer
  • Mats: 1 Barbed Gill Trout

  • H: cooking daily quest giver The Rokk in Shattrath, Awilo Lon’gomba in Dalaran
  • Mats: 1 Clefthoof Meat, 1 Lightning Eel
  • Difficulty: Medium to Hard
  • Notes: The recipe is soulbound and only comes from a random drop of either the Shattrath or Dalaran cooking dailies (like the Delicious Chocolate Cake recipe).  After you cook this up, don’t vend it, eat it! :D

Talbuk Steak

  • Recipe Source: Vendor (Nagrand), AH
  • Cost: 3g
  • A: Uriku in Telaar
  • H: Nula the Butcher in Garadar
  • Mats: 1 Talbuk Venison

And that’s it!

I considered providing additional details, such as a grouping of recipes by location or a comprehensive mat shopping list, but I think it’s probably going to take more time than it’s worth.  I have all of this additional data in a sortable excel spreadsheet, however, so if you’re interested in that email me and I’ll send it to you.  The data is current as of Patch 4.1, and please let me know if you find any errors.

Good luck future Chefs!
